WHAT JOB OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE THROUGH THE CÉGEP SYSTEM?

The CÉGEP system offers a wide range of employment opportunities that are grouped into four categories: support staff, professional staff, teaching staff and managers and administrators. Here’s a list of job titles for each category, as set out in the college classification plans.

Teaching Staff

Support Staff

Professional Staff

Managers and Administrators
Senior Administrators

Coordination Managers

Other Management Personnel

WHAT ARE THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR TEACHING IN A CÉGEP?

Since each college sets its own requirements for teaching positions, we cannot reference a system-wide standard. Unlike the primary and high school systems, however, a teaching permit is not mandatory. A generally agreed-upon rule is that every teacher must have at least a Bachelor’s degree in the discipline he or she is teaching. Some colleges may request a Master’s degree or a PhD. A final requirement at all institutions is an excellent command of written and oral French, or English if applying to an English-speaking college. Each college can augment or agree upon other criteria based on its ability to recruit applicants for a vacancy.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR A JOB?

To submit your application, we suggest that you register as an applicant at the Emploi Cégep recruitment portal. This website serves a dual purpose: it lists job postings for all institutions in the public college system and allows applicants to choose a single CÉGEP, all CÉGEPs in a specific region or every CÉGEP in the system.

WHEN DOES RECRUITMENT TAKE PLACE?

The main recruitment periods for CÉGEP teachers are:

Winter session: November and December
Fall session: May and June

However, job openings in all four categories – teaching staff, professional staff, support staff and managers – are posted year-round.

HOW CAN I PREPARE FOR THE FRENCH TEST THAT’S PART OF THE SELECTION PROCESS?

Every CÉGEP has adopted a policy regarding the promotion and quality of the French language. The intent is to boost use of the French language and promote high-quality French in all activities and communications. As educational institutions as well as employers and managers, CÉGEPs are concerned about the fluency and quality of French used by every member of the community – both students and employees.

The level of French fluency required varies by position and job category, and is assessed during the selection process, using various methods (written test, text for correction, composition, oral expression).
