IMPORTANT: We are currently accepting applications for the position of Student Life Counsellor - Health & Wellness Animator (Nurse) to address temporary workload requirements on a part-time basis. Please note that this is not a permanent position, and employment will be based on the College's temporary requirements.

JOB SUMMARY: UNDER THE GENERAL AUTHORITY OF THE DIRECTOR OF STUDENT SERVICES AND AS PART OF THE STUDENT SERVICES TEAM, THE HEALTH AND WELLNESS ANIMATOR (NURSE) IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTING HEALTH EDUCATION PROGRAMS AND PROVIDING INDIVIDUAL AND COLLECTIVE ASSISTANCE TO STUDENTS IN DEALING WITH HEALTH RELATED AND WELLNESS ISSUES.

NOTE: The INCUMBENT could be called upon to act as first responder by providing first aid and administering CPR, but would not otherwise be involved in patient care.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • INFORMATION: Make available information regarding health and wellness to students and promote the concept of total health.
  • CONSULTATIONS: Provide consultations (individuals, couples or groups) for concerns and/or needs related to health, such as general health problems, health habits and stress, nutrition, contraception, sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy, etc.
  • HEALTH EDUCATION: Promote health and prevention of illness through special programs and outreach on various health related topics such as AIDS, contraception, STD, sexual health, substance abuse, nutrition, self-care, sexual assault, lifestyles, etc.
  • PROGRAMS: Design and implement education programs suited for college-age students, e.g., drinking and driving, tobacco and drug abuse, sexual awareness, suicide prevention, etc.
  • REFERRALS: Refer students to proper medical specialists and/or emergency services in all cases of injury, illness or physical problems; make referrals to other College services as appropriate.
  • FIRST AID: Provide first aid treatment to members of the John Abbott Community in conjunction with Security staff of the College and other staff trained in First Aid
  • COLLECTIVE ORDINANCE: Implement collective ordinances in clinic setting (i.e. hormonal contraception, asthma treatment, other)

QUALIFICATIONS: Education

  • Undergraduate degree in nursing or community nursing.
  • A master's degree will be considered an asset.

Specific Requirements:

  • Member of l'Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec (OIIQ)
  • Recently certified in First Aid and CPR
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication and administrative skills.
  • Ability to understand and work with CEGEP students and their issues.
  • English (advanced oral, comprehension and written)
  • French (intermediate oral, comprehension and written)
  • Word (basic)
