JOB SUMMARY: UNDER GENERAL AUTHORITY OF THE DEAN OF SCIENCE AND DIRECT SUPERVISION OF THE CHAIRPERSON, MANAGE AND PARTICIPATE IN THE PREPARATION OF MATERIAL FOR LABORATORY WORK AND CLASSROOM DEMONSTRATIONS, ASSIST ACADEMIC PERSONNEL IN LAB OPERATION, AND ORGANIZE THE PURCHASES AND SUPPLIES FOR THE DEPARTMENT.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensure technical support for Biology courses as assigned per semester for both the day and continuing education programs
- Accurately prepare biochemical solutions and growth media
- Maintain microbiological and other cultures for lab use
- Operate, maintain and ensure correct use of lab instruments and equipment
- Ensure lab supplies are available when needed
- Set up lab materials (i.e. chemicals, glassware and equipment) and organize the materials to maximize efficiency and minimize hazards in the running of experiments
- Set up computerized labs
- Keep the laboratories and prep-room areas clean and in good order
- Arrange for biohazardous and hazardous chemical waste disposal
- Maintain safety equipment and post safety regulations
- Troubleshoot labs
- Recommend improvements in existing labs and the development of new labs
- Control and maintain inventory including ordering lab supplies
- Maintain a dates inventory for specified chemicals and reagents
- Operate and efficiently manage the purchase and expenditure files of the department
- Contact sales personnel concerning lab equipment and possible expenditures
- Contact personnel within the College or outside regarding technical assistance, information, or obtaining lab supplies
- Take an active role in improving the microscope slide-preserved specimen-collections, and other materials for lab use
- Keep up to date with developments in techniques in molecular biology and update practical knowledge of techniques when necessary
- Assist Biology Chairperson in budget planning and control
- Assist department in lab planning and development of facilities
- Assist chairperson in lab scheduling
- Provide assistance during Biology Open House and other related activities
- Assist in training of laboratory personnel
- Assist with student learning activities as assigned
- Perform any other related tasks as may be assigned
QUALIFICATIONS Education:
To have a college diploma in an appropriate specialty (Biology) or a diploma or an attestation of studies which is recognised as equivalent by the competent authority.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
- Good knowledge of laboratory equipment and procedures used in Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology
- Experience in Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) laboratory preferred
- Up to date Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) training
- Intermediate level knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
- Autonomous – able to work with minimal supervision
- Able to work collaboratively as a team member
- English (Intermediate oral, written comprehension and production)
- French (Basic oral, written comprehension and production)
Required Tests:
Testing may be required to demonstrate knowledge of:
- Aseptic inoculation of microbiological cultures (laboratory testing)
- Preparation and standardization of solutions (laboratory testing)
- Use and maintenance of a microscope (laboratory testing)
- Spectrophotometer 20 (laboratory testing)
- Laboratory safety (laboratory testing)
- French (Basic oral, written comprehension and production)
- English (Intermediate oral, written comprehension and production)
- Word (intermediate)
- Excel (intermediate)
