JOB SUMMARY: UNDER THE GENERAL SUPERVISION OF THE DEAN OF PEDAGOGICAL DEVELOPMENT & INNOVATION PROJECT, THE LABORATORY TECHNICIAN – PARAMEDIC CARE WILL MANAGE AND PARTICIPATE IN THE ASSEMBLY AND CONTROL OF MATERIAL FOR LABORATORY WORK AND CLASSROOM DEMONSTRATIONS AS SPECIFIED BY DEPARTMENT FACULTY. THEY WILL ALSO ASSIST THE FACULTY IN THE PREPARATION AND PRESENTATION OF SAME IN THE LABORATORY AND CLASSROOM AS REQUIRED. FURTHERMORE, THE INCUMBENT WILL OBTAIN BIDS, ORGANIZE PURCHASES, AND EXPEDITE EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES FOR THE DEPARTMENT.

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday - 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

General:

  • Assures technical support for Paramedic Care courses as assigned per semester.
  • Demonstrates use of equipment, assists, and supervises students using lab facilities and in the application of care methods during designated laboratories.
  • Assists the department in lab planning, scheduling and development of facilities.
  • Participates in the formative evaluation of students.
  • Supervises the methods of care through exercises, situations, etc., during free practices.
  • Prepares, sets up, and reorganizes equipment and supplies for each scheduled lab.
  • Operates, maintains and insures correct use of lab instruments and equipment.
  • Cleans and maintains lab equipment in working order – arrange for repairs or replacements as needed.
  • Ensures the availability of equipment according to the reservation lists and notifies the chairpersons of the department of the presence of scheduling conflicts.
  • Ensures follow-up and updating of the reservation lists for the material required by teachers for recurring training.
  • Prepares the equipment and collaborates in the organization of its transport when training takes place outdoors.
  • Participates in the choice of specialized equipment, apparatus, tools, machines and laboratory instruments; assembles, where appropriate, ensures their operation and rational use and adapts them to specific needs.
  • Assists in training laboratory personnel.
  • Sets up computer, VR, and technology-based labs.
  • Assists students in the use of computer based instructional materials.
  • Keeps the laboratories and pre-room areas clean and in good order.
  • Sees to the storage and classification of equipment in the laboratories and ensures that hygiene is maintained, in particular by washing used linens, by cleaning, disinfecting and storing equipment, and requiring periodic maintenance of the premises by the staff responsible for this task.
  • Calibrates, repairs, and maintains equipment and materials in accordance with standards of asepsis (arrhythmia simulator, portable suction, CPR manikin, defibrillation manikin, monitor semi-automatic defibrillator, etc.).
  • Ensures the availability of technical personnel during periods of laboratory operation.
  • Troubleshoots labs.
  • Maintains safety equipment and posts safety regulations.
  • Arranges for waste disposal.
  • Performs basic ambulance maintenance, including vehicle inspections, refueling, and generalized maintenance (such as driving them on a schedule, cleaning/restocking, etc.).
  • Organizes the clearance of snow off the ramp and its parking spaces.
  • Controls and maintains inventory, and is responsible for lab supplies being available when needed.
  • Contacts sales personnel concerning ordering of lab supplies and equipment, obtains quotes, places orders if so delegated and trained.
  • Administers the department's service and repair contracts, if so delegated.
  • Operates and manages efficiently the purchase and expenditure files of the department, if so delegated.
  • Assists the Paramedic Program Chairperson in budget control and planning.
  • Performs any other related tasks as may be assigned.

Simulation:

  • Understands human patient simulation and all its capabilities.
  • Troubleshoots issues related to technology.
  • Acts as a liaison to simulator and other equipment vendors.
  • Sets up scenarios as directed by Faculty for student learning.
  • Trains staff and faculty as necessary on equipment, software and simulators.
  • Installs software updates for computers, tablets, monitors and components as directed by manufacturer support to maintain equipment functionality.
  • Assists faculty in creating simulation scenarios to accomplish instructional and/or research goals and provide support in the simulation programming.
  • Determines and programs audiovisual (AV) needs and requirements as requested by lead faculty involving audio video systems (recording video capture, basic hardware functionality and processing), video postproduction editing, and integrating video into course management systems.
  • Collaborates with faculty as needed during learning activities (such as manipulating simulator responses through software, annotating data, or moulage).
  • Supports follow up required after learning activities (such as post‐course documentation and archiving activities).
  • Orients and provides ongoing training to faculty and students in proper simulation techniques.
  • Recommends updates and proposes new simulation, audiovisual and other software technology for consideration.
  • Ensures coordinated scheduling of manikins and simulation area utilizing scheduling software.
  • Supports faculty and students in initiatives involving clinical simulation research.
  • Regulates inventory, anticipates needed supplies, places orders, verifies receipt, and stocks supplies.
  • Coordinates maintenance, repair, and replacement of simulation equipment with manufacturer as needed.
  • Actively engages in simulation community by attending and participating in vendor training sessions, attending simulation conferences to maintain currency in field, and maintaining professional simulation organization membership (optional).

EDUCATION: Have a college diploma in the appropriate specialty (Pre-Hospital Emergency Care; Paramedic Care; Soins préhospitaliers d'urgence) or a diploma or an attestation of studies that is recognized as equivalent by the competent authority.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

  • Knowledge of clinical health care environment - i.e., paramedical, hospital, and pre-hospital setting.
  • Knowledge and experience with the operation of computers and ability to learn new technology with ease.
  • Practical knowledge of current procedures and equipment in Emergency care, i.e. assembly/disassembly of resuscitation manikins (simulators); suction units, stretchers, oxygen units, defibrillators is preferred.
  • Strong computer skills related to hardware, databases, web and network.
  • Creativity and flexibility in designing innovative approaches to solving problems.
  • Autonomous – able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Able to work collaboratively as a team member.
  • Ability to spend extended periods standing and to push / pull carts and equipment.
  • Physical ability to move heavy objects.
  • Be physically able to do light to heavy snow removal by hand (near ambulances).
  • Possess and maintain a class 4A driver's permit.
  • Being a CPR instructor recognized by the HSFC, Red Cross, or St-John's Ambulance would be an asset.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • English (Advanced written, written comprehension and oral).
  • French (Intermediate written, written comprehension and oral).
