JOB SUMMARY UNDER THE GENERAL AUTHORITY OF THE DEAN OF ARTS, GENERAL EDUCATION, THE MEDIA ARTS TECHNICIAN WILL MAINTAIN THE MEDIA ARTS COMPUTER AND FILM LABS AND ASSOCIATED HARDWARE AND EQUIPMENT, AND ASSIST FACULTY AND STUDENTS IN THE CLASSROOM AND THE MEDIA LABS AS ASSIGNED.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain MAC OS computers, software, network components and peripherals used in the digital editing labs. Identify software, network and hardware problems and failures and arrange for repair and adjustments
  • Maintain the Media Arts digital labs, exhibition, the hallway, the classroom and the Studio functional, clean and organised.
  • Maintain and do minor repairs of stock DSLRs and digital and other cameras, related accessories and other equipment such as sound recorders, lights, tripods, stabilisers and printers.
  • Keep inventory of all cameras and accessories, computer equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain, update, and operate the Media Arts' tab in the OPALS library system.
  • Order supplies to maintain inventory.
  • Set up digital labs and occasionally darkroom labs and prepare equipment for classes.
  • Support instructors during class time in labs.
  • Assist students during drop-in periods in the digital labs.
  • Occasionally support students in the darkroom lab.
  • Distribute equipment to students (and staff) for class projects.
  • Ensure a clean, safe and organized environment.
  • Keep abreast of current technological innovations in the Media & Visual Arts.
  • Assist the department in upgrading equipment through annual capital requests.
  • Provide technical demonstrations to Media Arts faculty and students.
  • Help with the set-up and take down and the technical needs of the biannual ALC vernissages and exhibitions.

EDUCATION: To have a college diploma in an appropriate specialty (such as New Media & Electronic Arts / Visual Arts) or a diploma or an attestation of studies which is recognized as equivalent by the competent authority.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

  • Knowledge of Media related software such as Adobe CC Suites and Audacity, an asset
  • Knowledge of the use and maintenance of digital cameras, an asset
  • Knowledge of Animation software such as Dragon Frame, Blender, and ToonBoom, an asset
  • Knowledge of lighting as well as sound production and equipment, an asset
  • Knowledge of the use of film cameras (35mm), and Audio-Visual equipment such as projectors, an asset
  • Knowledge of screen colour calibration, an asset.
  • Knowledge of Darkroom development and printing, an asset.
  • Experience with MAC environment, networking, securing and overseeing multi-media computing labs, an asset
  • English advanced both oral and written (see below)
  • French oral basic (see below)
  • Autonomous – able to work with minimal supervision and to communicate effectively with students and faculty.
  • Must be proactive, with strong organizational skills.
